On 3 June 2018,The Volcan de Fuego, Spanish for “Volcano of Fire,” erupted and released a five-mile stream of lava, a pyroclastic cloud and ash that fell over nearby Guatemala City, the country’s capital. the volcano suddenly produced its most powerful eruption since 1974. A lahar suddenly changed direction and unexpectedly hit El Rodeo and La Reunión, villages in Escuintla, which buried the town and killed surprised residents. The ash forced the closure of La Aurora International Airport, where the military assisted in clearing ash off of the runway. Ash also fell on the capital, Guatemala City.
